Volunteer
Volunteering with Family HomeStead has special rewards. Recovering from homelessness takes focus and hard work, and we are careful to protect the privacy of families who are in our program. While you may not meet the individuals you are helping, you will meet other dedicated and enthusiastic people who come together to make a difference for a family in need. Read volunteer testimonials.
Lift-a-Hammer workdays provide short-term or one-time opportunities to restore an apartment for a new, incoming family. Family HomeStead houses approximately 80 families at any given time of the year. As a family moves out, the apartments must be cleaned and repainted. These fun workdays are led by an experienced supervisor, and Family HomeStead provides all painting and cleaning supplies. This is a wonderful, hands-on activity for work, church or social groups. Interested individuals can be added to groups that need an additional hand.
Adopt-a-Home is an opportunity to financially sustain a housing unit for one year, and requires a contribution of $3500. Businesses, faith-based organizations, and service groups make excellent Adopt-a-Home sponsors. Our sponsors often choose to engage in a workday to help maintain the unit themselves.
Adopt-a-Family programs help meet the seasonal needs of client families such as back-to-school basics and holiday gifts. Individual donors or groups adopt a specific child or family and shop according to their needs. Volunteers are then needed to sort the donated items and wrap gifts.
HomeSteaders auxiliary is a support organization that provides public awareness about homelessness, organizes and coordinates fundraisers and special events, and collects “bare necessities” for families entering Family HomeStead’s Emergency Housing Program.
Bare Necessities Parties, initiated by HomeSteaders, are social gatherings with a purpose. Friends come together over coffee or supper, bringing much-needed personal care items like toothpaste, shampoo and diapers for families entering emergency housing. If you’re interested in hosting a Bare Necessities Party, please email Judy Mugler (judy at familyhomestead dot org) for a list of most needed items.
Special Events volunteers help with projects or fundraisers that occur throughout the year. Opportunities include helping with HomeSteaders events, staffing a booth at an agency fair or hosting an information gathering on Family HomeStead.
Volunteer Staff help in the office on an as needed basis. Tasks include assembling mailings and sorting gifts donated through our Adopt-a-Family programs.
